Austria: Vienna & Unterkohlstätten

Austria, 20th – 22th of February.

Why did I go there?

I was there to work on a BEST project: an regional level engineering competition called CEBEC (Central European BEST Engineering Competion), in which I’m involved as Team-Design Topic Responsible. This competition will take place in Vienna, in this period: 7-11 May 2009 and will have 6 teams (of 4 people each) competing in 2 categories: Team Design and Case Study. Each of the 6 teams is from another city: Ljubljana, Bratislava, Brno, Vienna, Graz and Budapest.

How was it?

I arrived in Vienna by train, somewhere around noon and Cristoph took me on a guided tour of Vienna (or better said: the best parts of the city, except Schonbrunn Palace). It’s a wonderful city, but the fact that it was windy, cold and snowing with tiny snow-flakes made it look a bit worse than I imagined.

When we met with the others (Pia and Sigi from Vienna, Beny from Brno and Vica from Budapest), we went by car on a hill where we could see a panoramic  view of Vienna. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see much because of the fog :(

In the evening, we went by car to Unterkohlstätten, the hicktown in which Pia’s gradma lives and where we were going to work for CEBEC in the next 2 days.

The house was wonderful! I loved that it was kind of isolated, had a wood and 2 lakes just a few meters from it and a big yard. The rooms were nicely decorated and I liked the fact that there were toys all around (Pia’s little cousins spend a lot of time there). The huge bathroom (with a big tub, a modern shower and a sauna) got a big “wooow!” from all of us.

It was definitely I nice place to work in. Maybe that’s why we were so efficient :)

Funny facts:

  • I didn’t have a bathing-suit, so at first, I stayed dressed in the sauna (btw, it was my first time in a sauna). When I could resist the heat anymore, I remained in a towel.
  • We all were very impressed by the bathroom, so we decided to have our small international evening there :) – it was fun!
  • 3 of us weren’t speaking German at all. Pia’s gradma kept on forgeting that and spoke with us in here native language. That created some amusing situations.
