Getting a divorce for Arabs

Do you know what it takes for an Arab to divorce his wife?

…an SMS with the words: “I divorce you! I divorce you! I divorce you!”

That’s it!

Now I have no idea why they have to write it three times…but still I could almost bet it is the fastest divorce procedure in the world!

PS. Thank you Francis for this quite unique piece of information

They have to say it 3 times because originally, in the Koran, the rule is this: you say it first as to announce it: “I want to divorce you”!, so the spouse becomes aware of this fact. The second time you say it is after 3 months, so you have time to think whether you really want to go through with it. The third time you say it is after another 3 months, so in total after 6 months from the first time you announced it. It is considered that within this time the spouses might realize that divorce is a mistake and change their minds about it.
Nowadays people don’t follow the religious tradition that much, that’s why you can say it 3 times in one go, be it through sms, email or a messenger pigeon…

    hug hug! :)

    Hey Radu…

This divorce thinggie, if you say it three times, it means that you will not be able to marry that person back, if the person later would like to reconcile with his ex wife.

If its written or mentioned once or twice, the ex couple can always reconcile back. but if its the third time or mentioned three times, they are prohibited to get back together, whatever the circumstances is.

    :)
